So, what are the laws regarding weed in the Dominican Republic? Let me break it down for you. The Dominican Congress passed a law back in 1988 stating that possessing any amount of marijuana, whether it’s for medical or recreational purposes, is completely illegal. And if you get caught with it, you’re gonna face some serious penalties.
Now, depending on how much weed you have on you, there are different categories and corresponding punishments. If you’ve got less than 20 grams of weed or less than 5 grams of hashish on you, that’s considered simple possession and you could face up to two years in jail and a fine of $2,500 Dominican pesos.
If you’ve got anywhere from 20 grams to one pound of weed or more than 5 grams but less than a quarter pound of hashish on you, that’s considered distribution or vending. You could face up to 10 years in jail and a fine of $50,000 Dominican pesos.
Now, if you’ve got a pound or more of weed or a quarter pound or more of hashish on you, that’s considered drug trafficking. And let me tell ya, the penalties for that are no joke. You could face up to 20 years in jail and a fine of $50,000 Dominican pesos.
And if you’re a supplier, financier, or patronizer of someone else’s drug use? Well then, my friend, you could be facing fines upwards of $100,000 Dominican pesos.
So yeah, as you can see, the Dominican Republic does not mess around when it comes to weed. And don’t even think about growing it yourself – that’s just asking for trouble.
Now I know some of y’all might be medical marijuana users and wondering if that’s allowed. Sorry to say folks but nope – medical cannabis is just as illegal as recreational cannabis in the Dominican Republic.
And for those of y’all wondering about CBD oil – sorry again. That’s still considered a cannabis product and therefore illegal.
