A little breeze can actually be good for our plants, helping with gas exchange and causing micro-injuries that lead to stronger growth. But too much wind can be a serious problem. Strong gusts can snap stems, damage leaves, and even cause wind burn.
What is wind burn, you ask? Well, it’s when excessive airflow causes water loss in the plant tissue, resulting in shriveled and curled up leaves. Not a good look for our precious buds. But don’t worry, there are ways to prevent and fix wind burn.
When growing indoors, make sure to place your fans at opposing ends of the grow tent and facing the wall. This will help circulate air without directing a breeze at your plants. You can also use oscillating fans positioned at a safe distance from your plants.
If you notice signs of wind burn, such as clawing, stunted growth, smaller buds, and discoloration on leaves, you can reposition your fans away from your plant canopies and turn down the power settings. You can also defoliate any damaged leaves to direct nutrients towards new growth.
Growing outdoors comes with its own set of challenges, but there are plenty of things you can do to prevent wind damage. Choose a sheltered spot in your garden surrounded by hedges or trees if possible. Use trellises or plant cages to protect against strong winds and keep your plants topped and trimmed to create a more protective shape.
If wind burn does occur outdoors, try relocating your plants to a more sheltered spot or erecting a temporary windbreak. And if a stem does happen to break, don’t panic! Cannabis plants have an impressive capacity to recover if you act fast enough.
