So, check it – plants need carbon dioxide to breathe, so if you want your plants to grow faster and stronger, you gotta give ’em as much CO2 as possible. That means growing them in an enclosed space that’s rich in that sweet gas.
Now, if you wanna be a real OG, you’ll wanna set up your grow room next to a gas appliance like a hot water heater or furnace. When those things combust, they create CO2 and heat, which will keep your plants warm on those cold nights. Plus, the heavier CO2 that doesn’t get exhausted with the other gases can help your plants grow faster.
But let’s say you don’t have access to a gas appliance or you wanna take it to the next level – that’s when you bust out the CO2 generator. The best kind is a low-pressure tank that’s usually used for soft drinks or beer kegs. You can get them in different sizes, from 20 ounces to over 20 pounds. Prices range from $25 to $100.
Some growers like to hook up a hose or hoses to their tanks and let the CO2 slowly bleed out over their plants. Others prefer to semi-seal their grow room with a plastic shower curtain and flood it with CO2 for about 20 seconds before sealing it up for a few hours. That creates a hyperbaric chamber for your plants that’ll make ’em grow like crazy and repel pesky spider mites and other bugs that breathe oxygen.
But wait, there’s more! You can also generate CO2 through chemical processes. One way is to burn a candle inside your sealed grow room. As long as the candle is burning, it’ll produce carbon dioxide and nothing else. If the candle goes out before it’s used up (which is unlikely), the atmosphere inside will still be saturated with CO2.
Another way is to use vinegar and baking soda. Suspend an upside-down bottle of vinegar about a foot above a bowl of baking soda. Poke a small hole in the cap so that about one drop of vinegar falls into the soda every minute. The acid in the vinegar reacts with the baking soda to create CO2 gas.
