We just talk naturally as things come up. Seems in this world things come up all of the time! ;-) My oldest daughter has been easy to parent in that she hasn't tried to push early for "growing up." I have a 5 year old daughter that might pose a different path. :-)

Yeah, that's why I never really wanted turkeys. We'll see how this goes, I guess!

Don't have any daughters, just two boys so far...but I imagine that trying to remember how I felt at that age and what would have been most helpful for me to hear at that time would be helpful.

AWESOME! Turkeys are really hard to raise up. As juveniles they can drop just because you moved them from one cage to another. I sold my pair this Spring. Maybe I'll try again in the future, but with those midget turkeys... Good Luck!

Dana,

How exciting! The turkey is definitely thrilling and I admire your leap into the world of dairy cows. We had "cow share" locally for a couple of years and oh, the milk was GOOD. But the family with the cows did all the work. Then it got to be too hard to drive out so now we buy organic, non homogenized milk from a local store. Expensive. We have acreage and COULD do cows but I don't feel brave enough. Chickens yes, but not cows for now.

Thanks, Jason! They are actually a dual purpose breed. For their size (three feet tall) they give a decent amount of milk. The two of them together should give us a little surplus but not drown us in milk, either. It's supposed to be rich and creamy with a high butterfat content, but smaller fat globules than the milk of a Jersey.

Farming is a pleasure. Unfortunately, though I grew up on a small farm, my family presently does not have enough land. I hope to see that change in the future. Please be sure to enjoy yourself, as you seem to be doing.
On another note, I am not familiar with that breed of cattle, but they look more like beef cattle than dairy cattle. Do you expect them to give much, or is their fat content high?

If it is any comfort, bald eagles don't usually go after chickens. I don't know that I would trust it, but last year we had three hanging out during the migration and they never even came in for a second look. They do need a lot of swooping space to come down and hunt, but they are also shyer than a hawk. Of course, as soon as you turn them out, you will get a close up of a bald eagle taking a chicken, though.

Our biggest issues has been when the birds were penned in a tractor and didn't have the ability to get away when a weasel found them. :(

Well, I wonder if a turkey will be a good guardian bird for the rest of your flock?

I saw a bald eagle flying overhead when we were working out at the farm the other day. I guess my chickens won't be free range birds. I told Ron we would have to create a fenced food forest with trees and cane berries to provide some protection. Then I told him it would be nice to divide the food forest into paddocks so we can use the concept of rotational grazing. He gave me that look. You know the one that means that sounds like a lot of work for him. Expensive too.
