In which my daughter interviews me about beauty and beauty mishaps with a $50 Visa gift card giveaway

Mouse: “Mom, at camp they talked about true beauty. They said we should want people to like us for who we are and not for what we look like and that beauty isn’t about make-up. They even covered up all the mirrors for a day to show how many times we looked in a mirror to see our appearance. Why don’t you wear make-up?”

Me: “Well, that’s a sort of difficult question. Part of it is what you’re talking about. I don’t believe we need to hide that we’re aging. I have some Christian reasons for not wearing make-up, I guess, but honestly outside of junior high, I have never really worn make-up, even before I became a Christian.”

Mouse: “So what kind of make-up did you wear then?”

Me: “I remember having electric blue mascara that I loved.”

Mouse: “Electric blue?”

Me: “Yes. Here let me show you a picture.”

(I looked up electric blue mascara and found a picture of a woman wearing it.)

Mouse: “She looks like a peacock.”

Me: “Then there was the time I bought this bright red nail polish. I didn’t know anything about make-up, but it seems like that was always what the ladies in the commercials wore. So I put it on and I thought it was so beautiful. At least until I got on the bus for school and it seemed like I was wearing neon signs on my fingers. I spent the whole day trying to hide my fingers.”

Mouse: “But you were OK with the electric blue mascara.”

Me: “I was OK with the electric blue mascara.”

Mouse: “It is probably good that you don’t wear make-up.

Me: “It probably is.”

Mouse: “I get how beauty is supposed to be from the inside and we shouldn’t try to hide behind a mask, but I have a horse show coming up and in the few minutes I present Kristie, the judge isn’t going to get to know me or see any inner beauty. How do I get ready for that so that I can do well?”

Me: “Well, you might be surprised how much someone can see in a few minutes. If you are patient with Kristie, friendly and look like you are excited to be there, the judges will notice and it will speak far more to your character than well applied lipstick. But that doesn’t mean that your physical appearance isn’t important at all. What are you doing to get Kristie ready for show?”

Mouse. “I brush her twice a day and comb her mane and tail. I wipe away the moisture from her eyes and nose. I braid her mane to keep the hair from breaking. I can also wash her every day, but I can only use soap once a week so I don’t wash away her natural oils.”

Me: “It isn’t that much different for people, really. If you brush your hair every day, it will be neat and free of tangles but it will also get shinier as you work your natural oils through your hair. Regular showering keeps you clean. And a healthy diet will help your skin glow, just like a healthy diet will make Kristie look prettier because she will be healthier. You can also use lotions or things that help moisturize your skin, like that Satin Care Passionista Fruit Shave Gel you got when we did the review for the Venus Embrace Razor.”

Mouse: “OK. Did you really wear electric blue mascara?”

Me: “Yes, I did. Would you like some?”

Mouse: “No, thank you. Can I go to bed now?”

Me: “OK and yes you may. Thank you for working on this with me. Good night, sweetheart.”

I would wear makeup that didn’t match my skin color to hide my acne, didn’t look better. Thanks for the giveaway.

No daughter for me, but I always told my sister the #1 thing she could do, which is pretty low-maintance but makes a big impact, is keep her eyebrows plucked. It only takes about 5 minutes every week or two, but works WONDERS. So that’d be the advice I’d pass on to my daughter, too, whenever I have one.

  4. I have no daughter, I have a son who hopefully will never wear makeup :)

My immediate thought of my first beauty mishap was a very, very long time ago. I think I was around age 12? I have very white skin and wanted to look tan when I wore shorts. Again, this was a really long time ago, like when Rick Springfield’s “Jessie’s Girl” was the song of the day. Anyway, a friend of mine came over and brought something she said her mother had used and it was going to solve all of our problems. It was called QT (for quick tan, I guess) and I ended up looking like a steaky Oompah Loompah, with extra dark orange spots that looked a bit like rust in between my fingers, on my elbows and knees. It was awful and seemed to take lots of time and scrubbing before it went away. To this day I won’t use any self-tanner.

Keep it simple, moisturizer with SPF & chapstick

  6. Mel says:

I don’t yet have a daughter, but I believe that spf protection on our face is essential

  7. Sean says:

sometimes less make up is more

  8. Linda says:

When we were younger my sister stole my liptsick and smeared it all over her face, and she thought she looked pretty. It was too funny.

  9. Crayl says:

My twin daughters have blond hair, which can become brittle after a summer of sun and swimming fun, not to mention, green. We learned that a little spray on conditioner before being out in the sun helped keep their hair in better condition, and less likely to turn colors as well.

I think the best tips about protecting skin, like SPf

  11. Maria Cantu says:

To always pluck her eyebrows and use moisturizer.

  12. Tracy Robertson says:

I think my funniest beauty mishap was when I was in high school and tried foundation for the first time. I bought some, but no one taught me how to apply it, so I figured the more, the better. It’s funny that it didn’t look so bad in the bathroom lighting in the morning when I put it on, but later in the day it turned all cakey and orange. My teacher said that I looked ill, and tried to send me home from school, LOL!

  13. Kerry says:

My only tips to my daughters are to wear what makes them feel good.

  14. Betty C says:

My worst beauty experience was when we got a sample of a new soap and I took a shower with it. I broke out in a rash from head to toe. So my advice was always do a small test before using anything on your whole body.

  15. whitney says:

My funniest beauty mishap was definitely when I started wearing make up in junior high trying to wear eye liner for the first time. I looked like a raccoon!

  16. Stacy Kurtz says:

I tell my daughter to use spf daily and invest in a great mascara to make your eyes pop.

  17. elizabeth says:

I’ve always told my daughters that making sure you drink enough water is the best thing you can do. It keeps you hydrated and helps your skin.

  18. angie lilly says:

LOL I have this habit that when a lip balm tube is empty, I take a little knife and take out the rest of it and spread it on my dry heels! I recently did this and was not paying attention that the lip balm was tinted! It was berry/plum color and I smeared it all over my heels and it stained them! I have showered three times since this mistake and there is still a faint pink color to my heels! LOL

  19. Sarah L says:

Wear a hat as well as the sunscreen & sunglasses when you’re out & about drinking the water you always have by your side.
    Thanks for the contest.

My beauty tip is to not wear makeup trends just because other people are wearing them. Not all makeup looks are right for everyone, so wear what works for you.

my biggest and most embarrasing beauty mishap was when i was maybe 15..my mom had some facial cleanser in the bathroom…so one day after my shower i decided i had to use it…so i did..little did i know that whatever chemicals made up that cleanser…would make me have a very serious reaction…in the morning my face was twice the normal size..my eyes were almost swollen shut…i cried and cried soo hard…mom felt bad for me and let me stay home from school..when my stepdad found out i wasnt going to school, he got mad and insisted to know just why i got to stay home…i could hear my mom laughing explaining to him that whatever i had gotten into in the bathroom had made my face swollen…he then walked down the hall to my room, to get a look at me…when he saw me he just kinda shook his head and closed the door…i could hear him telling my mom to stop laughing and take me to the doctor…all the doc said was it was an allergic reaction and that i was lucky it only affected my skin and not my nose throat or ears…it cleared up by the end of the day…and to this day i am very weary of “facial cleansers”…erikaruizsevenonethree at gmail dot com
