Oh, what a sweetie… he looks like a Bernese Mountain Dog? I want him!! :-)

Oh my goodness, what a sweet face! Love the coloring and can smell the puppy breath. :)

    Hmm . . . male or female?

What a sweetie! You needing a boy name or a girl name?
‘Kirk’ is a great dog name. Short and sharp for calling, but easily softened into ‘Kirky’ or ‘Kirkle’ for endearment time. :-)
Our Kirk-puppy turned into 115 monstrous, galumphing lbs. of Anatolian shepherd. But he’s still a sweetheart. :-)

If a girl, I think she looks like a ‘Kim’.

Yes, he’s a Bernese Mountain Dog. And I guess it is rather important to say he’s a he when looking for a name, huh?

My first thought was Bär (German for Bear), but my son kind of objected which I thought was sweet. That’s his nickname, though he won’t let me call him that. I just liked that he was still possessive of it.

Then my husband thought Mr. Tiggles. Which was sweet. A little weird calling a dog one of the names I called Tiggy, but then holding him to my cheek and whispering Mr. Tiggles felt good. I thought of all the times I’ve sat on the porch and sighed, “Oh, Mr. Tiggles,” and how now the puppy might come and give me a kiss. But Bear thought that would be too depressing.

Now I’m kind of liking Bärli (Little Bear), the name of one of the goats in Heidi. Waiting to see if Bear thinks that’s still too close to his name.

Hmm – I like the Barli – and I also think he is just so cute. What language is connected to the Bernese? Sorry – I’m ok on cockers and goldens but thats my animal half knowledge end. Umm _ I kind of like MrTiggles – or MrT. – it should be something that makes you feel warm inside when you call and see him. I think that there is a dog name ‘listy’ thing on the Internet. If you look up dog names or google them – I bet you may find just the right warm fuzzy one. I like the Kirk too though. Its so so hard to name a dog – it took us awhile to name out last little black cocker – we have had him 2 weeks. Our black cocker before him was Sammie and we had tons of nicknames for him. We had to let him go over the rainbow bridge March 30th and he is there now playing with your Tiggy – promise!! It will come to you – the name and a thousand nicknames. Hugs to all of you and he truly is gorgeous!! Hugs.

Too bad he won’t stay little.

But we like our dogs big, dad!

And Bernese Mountain Dogs are Swiss, Deb. That’s why I was kind of thinking Baerli from Heidi.

Ha, ha! Swiss made me think of Watch, which reminded me of the dog from the Boxcar Children books. :) Very cute puppy!

Well, he’s been accepted by the other dogs. A little nervous, yet, but his curiosity is beginning to peep through. He was fascinated with the drain pipe. :)

How about “chap?” Life is all about the differnt “chapters” of our lives. No two chapters ever look the same, but in the end it is all the different chapters added together that tell our story.
this new dog is a part of your new chapter…Plus it has a nice ring to it:)

    I think he looks like a Ringo…

Zukunftsträume – means “future dreams” which I thought was kind of cool – maybe call him “Zuk” or “Zukun”

Or “Hoffen” which means hope in German -certainly easier to say!

I hope that your new pet brings you much happiness. Animals demand so little of us and give so much love. I have always found them to be immensely comforting in the dark times in my life.

  16. Saw a pup just like this one at the pet store the other day. His name was Gene. Totally not a typical dog name, but I thought it was kind of cute.

Our Border+Standard Collie mix was named Ringo. One of the two best dogs I’ve ever owned. If he did something he wasn’t supposed to, you knew it before you found whatever it was he did. He had a VERY guilty conscience.

I agree, this pup looks like a “Bear”. Here is the name/word in other languages:
    Spanish: Oso
    Danish: Bærer
    Finnish: Karhu
    German: Bär
    Irish: Marc
    Norwegian/Swedish: Bjørn
    Portuguese: Urso
    Welsh: Arth
All Slavic-ish languages: Medved (or a derivative)

Adorable puppy! He looks like a Levi to me. But looking at him ,again, Barli would suit, too.

Our dogs are named Roxie (the Boxer), Bean (the Boston Terrier), and Cash (the Mastiff).

    Ruth

I showed the picture to my 4 and 3 yr olds and they said he looks like a “Kyle”. Lol I have no idea where they got that from. He is really cute! I can only think of food names right now (lol) that coordinate with the color of his fur. But those are cheesy. ;) Congrats on the new dog!

    Howard

Hmm .. Spot? No. How about Deefer? As in D fer Dog.

  21. What about Archer?

  22. 22
    Dana

So many great names! I think I need more dogs . . .

I have a feeling he’s going to be a Jake, though. My son is sort of set on it. I decided it would be Jake from Kipper, though he’s naming after a Lego figure. Somehow I never knew they even had names . . .

  23. 23
    Kathy

He looks like a Toby :)

    Gina

    KC- King’s Canine

    Julie

You do know he has to grow into those huge paws! What about Barrel ~ not a conventional name. But, I never worry about that. I just worry about whether or not I would be embarrassed to stand at the back porch and holler the name.

  26. 26
    Dana

Yeah, those paws amaze me. :)

  27. 27
    Dana

And out here, I don’t have to worry about what I call on the back porch, just what the kids say in Sunday School. :)

    jen

He looks very sweet Dana. How about the name Brownie- like the treat?
Maybe the kids would like that name? I know he’ll mostly be black however I was thinking more of his brown markings and if he has a sweet temperament.

    Jill

I like Frank. But Mr. Tiggles and Barli are nice, too…

  30. 30
    Ashley Downey

Well, he look like a Shepard or Scout, Jack. Just some ideas.

  31. 31
    Dana

Well, those are pretty good names, Ashley! Especially since I think Jack finally stuck!

  32. 32
    Jo Lynn

OH isn’t he adorable! I’d call him Loki…..”God of mischief” :D

  33. 33
    Joede

I love Barli and Mr Tiggles! I looked at his eyes and thought Toby. I have never had a “Toby”, but maybe one day!

  34. 34
    Sharon O

I think he looks like a Dudley or if it is a girl Sam is cute.

  35. 35
    Lynda

He is adorable! I love big dogs too. What about Patch or Patches? Just a little patch for your heart, Dana.

We just got a four legged baby too….a Rottie baby we named Stryker after the new Army vehicle ( two of my sons in law are Army, one just having deployed to Afganistan on Wednesdsay). Strykers are quiet, fast and powerful. We are thinking Thud would have been a good name too…the sound he makes when he walks (or runs ) into walls and people.

    tamela

My thought is Apolla or Mayor~ Hero would be a suggestion as well~ Have fun naming him~

  38. 38
    Anne

If it’s male, my suggestion is Otto! :)

  39. 39
    Molly

I think Oscar feels right. :) or Zeus… I also like Julie’s suggestion of “Barrel” because he will end up big and round like a barrel. :)

    Michelle

A lot a great ideas. My husband thought he looks like a “Buster” and I thought “Tundra”. Whatever his name, he’s beautiful! :)

  41. 41
    Joy Ellis

Okay, We saw how big the paws were and immediately thought of Titan! LOL Beautiful puppy! Now are are wanting one!!

  42. 42
    Sheri

He looks like a “Beau” to me. It means both beautiful and devoted companion. Just my two cents. :D

  43. 43
    Dana

Ah, I like those! I think Jake is sticking, after the sheepdog in Kipper. I may need more dogs for all the names now. :)

He’s doing so well, and starting to follow me everywhere.

  44. 44
    Sheri

Whatever you name him, glad to hear he’s doing well and knows who his Mommy is. ;)

  45. 45
    Steene

He’s a cutie. I agree with @sheri, “Beau” is a great name for a dog. especially when its going to be huge in a few months. My neighbor has one. So energetic and just a ball of fun.

  46. 46
    sue

Oh, he’s beautiful! What a sweet face! And look at the size of those front paws!!

  47. Love Jack! For some reason we give our dogs boys names…we have Sammy and Pete. Have fun with him, he’s adorable!

  48. How about Wilberforce…and call him Wilber?

  49. P.S. He’s incredibly cute…..*almost* makes me want a new puppy :)

ROSCO…short for the title of your blog!!!

I actually thought of this immediatley without thought to your blog name..I’ve always liked this name for a dog.

    soooo cute

    My daughters immediately said: Apricot!

Beautiful dog. We love big dogs! But…no room for one right now. Our large family lives in what the kids call our “cottage in the sky”, a 3 bedroom condo in a very big city.

My grandmother was born in Roscommon, Michigan. The title of your blog takes my mind up to the farm there. Such a beautiful place…

Oh what a sweetie! He looks just like the BMD my best friend had when we were kids. His name was Bandit. Gorgeous dog!

    Mary

Ok, all I can think of when I look at this is- is that pee under his paws?? Haha! If somebody gave us a puppy I would probably egg their house.
    He’s pretty cute, though. :D

  54. 54
    Dana

:) No, he had just come in from walking down to the chickens with me and had dew on his paws.

It’s so sweet! I love dogs. I have 3 myself. Two of them are still puppies. I adore them.
