Purina Pro Plan Selects review and $100 Visa gift card giveaway!

This is a sponsored review by BlogHer and Purina.

I was very excited at the opportunity to review Purina’s ProPlan Selects, at first just because it’s dog food and with four large dogs, we go through a ton of dog food.

Ever-observant — especially when it comes to food — Faithful checks out the boxes while I learn a little more about dog food and nutrition.

We have always looked at two things when it comes to dog food: price and the serving size. Cheaper dog foods tend to contain more fillers and after feeding an extra cup per serving often do not actually save you much money.

But I never really thought about it much beyond that. After all, it’s dog food, right?

As soon as the bags were opened, the dogs dived right into the research.

They had no complaints. They like dog food. Faithful (the brown one) even accepted handfuls of kibble in lieu of treats at training time. But then, that dog works for the sheer joy of working.

But our dogs are a little more than “just” pets. Yes, they are our companions, and that is a significant role in any family. But they also have jobs to do and they need a diet that can supply them the energy they need for their activity levels.

OK, Zane is usually a little more well-behaved than that, but you just never know when you are working with animals. And that smile makes it all worth while.

And whether they always listen to us or not, our animals are important to us and we do want to give them the best of what we can afford. When I look at the Purina ProPlan Selects, I like that real meat is its first listed ingredient and that there are other quality proteins in the ingredient list. I like that it doesn’t contain corn, wheat or soy as fillers and that there are no artificial colorings, flavors or preservatives. I especially like that it is made in the USA. It provides them the nutrients they need to keep up with their jobs here, to play with the children and to sleep at my feet in the evening when the house is quiet. If you would like to try some for yourself, Purina is offering a $3.00 coupon from their website.

And now for the giveaway! Tell me how special your dog is in your family for a chance to win a $100 Visa gift card from BlogHer! This contest will run from April 4th – May 4th.

We got our first dog last Christmas. I dreaded the mess, the barking, the upkeep. Now I am the first to greet her in the morning and then watch as my seven year old climbs out of her shell and spends hours in the backyard playing fetch and teaching tricks. I now understand how pet owners consider their dogs a part of the family because in four months she has become a part of ours.

We have 3 adult dogs and 13 English Shepherd puppies right now!

Our first dog, Darby, is our PlymouthRockRanchHound, that we got from the shelter. She is a precious rock nut. Her favorite thing in the world is to retrieve a thrown rock, bring it to your feet, jump in the air and bark, asking for you to throw it again. She will do this all day long if you let her ; ) I call her Rock Brain ; )

Our other 2 adult dogs are English Shepherds. They are a delightful addition to our family and our family homestead. They love their people and they love their people’s animals/livestock. When new goatlings or calves are born, they are right there helping to take care of the new babies, if momma will let them. When we are disbudding babies, they are right there to lick and comfort them and make sure they’re ok. We have been totally blessed by their addition to our family.

Their 13 pups have been so very fun to raise! We have loved watching their little personalities emerge, to see who is the most dominant, who watches the livestock, who wants to be in the cabin with his/her people, who is the escape artist, who loves to be cuddled and hugged on and who likes to burrow in the fresh garden beds like rooting pigs ; ) These pups are now ready to go to their forever homes, if any of y’all reading are looking for a family companion and right-hand ranch hand and friend.

With 15 canine mouths to feed, we could sure use some help in the dog food department. That visa card would be mighty helpful!

We have one dog that we rescued from a puppy mill… he was and is our first baby. I love that he’s the first to know that I’m pregnant each time. As soon as he starts sleeping on my stomach I know I better take a test! He’s been right all three times. :)

We have a 9 month old Jack Russel puppy – he is FULL of energy but we needed a dog that could keep up with our two pre-school aged daughters. They wind each other up and wear each other out! It is a good balance!

We are a family of seven with three dogs. We have a Boston Bull Terrier, a Boxer, and a Mastiff. Needless to say there’s always something going on with an added dose of slobber courtesy of the Mastiff and baby. Our dogs are great with the children and keeping watch on our property. Though, we haven’t had much luck keeping cats around..hmmm.

  10. Marie says:

We have 2 dogs, Jack and Zoe. Jack is a Lab/ Beagle mix, Zoe is a Border Collie mix. They are our friends and protectors. We live in a rural area so they are also good for keeping critters away from our gardens. They also follow our kiddos out when they venture into the woods. It is really nice to have them around.

  11. Shelley says:

We have 2 dogs, Sadie and Opie. We got them both from the shelter and I must say, they’re pretty spoiled now! They are our companions, protectors, playmates and sometimes – the entertainment :)

  12. I had a very awesome response typed out earlier but your post ate it. I think you were doing some editing.

Our dog has changed our life for the better. She is an American Pit Bull Terrier and she is the sweetest, nicest, most well-behaved animal I’ve ever had. Shadow, our dog, has been my best companion, friend, and comfort. She has also impacted the self-esteem and well-being of our children. Nate and Sammi can often be said uttering the following words when Shadow comes up to them, sniffs their hands, and licks their arm: “Mom! She loves me! She loves me so much!”

You can read about our choice to select an American Pit Bull Terrier from Animal Control here: http://emeraldsunshine.org/2009/01/10/seriously-a-pit-bull/

  13. Alina Joy says:

I’m not a dog lover, but my husband is. When we got married I knew it was inevitable that we would have to get a dog so I decided to actively look for a dog that I knew I could live with rather than just get stuck with a dog that he wanted. My husband laughed at how much effort I put into finding the “right” dog for us. We ended up finding Trooper at an animal shelter. We had made an appointment to see him, but when we got there somebody else was already looking at him. My husband saw the dog from a distance and snidely remarked, “I hope that ugly dog isn’t the one you want us to see!” He thought he was joking, but the joke was on him because that was “our” dog! Trooper had the most terrible case of “Heinz 57″ you’d ever want to see, but his personality won us both over and we brought him home that night. Over the years, many people told us, “That dog is so ugly he’s cute.” Anyway, my husband **promised** me that this dog would not involve me in the least… It would be his dog and he would feed the dog and take care of him and I wouldn’t even have to notice that we even had a dog. Well, two or three days after we got the dog, my husband’s grandmother had a stroke and he unexpectedly had to fly to Canada to be with her. I was very newly married and it was the first time I had slept in a house alone. I was suddenly thankful to have the dog! By the time he got home, Trooper was MY dog too! =) He was such a character! Fast forward a couple of years… When I brought my first baby home, Troopers nose was so out of joint! He lived three more years after that and he steadfastly refused to even look at that first baby! As soon as she could walk we made it her “responsibility” to feed Trooper and he learned to tolerate her… he was never unkind to her… but he never really liked her. =)

  15. Alida Bunder says:

When my mother was diagnosed with cancer, we took her into our home to take care of her. One day while visiting a doctor, she asked for a dog. I immediately went searching and found a Pekingneese that someone did not want. His name was Simba and he came to live with us that very night. He stood guard over my mother’s bed everyday. When she would get up during the night, Simba was always there at her heels. My mother would even get out of bed to come with me to the vet, or go sit in the backyard to watch me give him a bath. He was a little angel sent to us to help get through this difficult time in our lives.
    I also tweeted this contest.

  16. sprittibee says:

I’m a cat person, but my mother’s dog is her LIFE. She’s a petite Siberian Husky named Silver and she’s the cutest ‘talker’ (howls) that I’ve ever heard from the Canine clan. She’s pretty useless, though. She lets the skunks and raccoons eat the cat food on her porch and digs holes all over the yard (which is why we don’t have a dog here in the city – where neighbors would make us pay to fix the fence). When we get out to the country, we’ll be adding a big puppy to the family. Can’t wait.

  17. sherrie says:

Love my dogs like they are my children. We moved in to our home 14 years ago and there was a little dog looking at me from the house next door. I told my daughter that is my next dog. He looked just like the dog I grew up with. to make a long story short Wizzer has been my best friend ever since.

  18. Christy says:

Wow this would be great with 7 dogs one being a new puppy that weighs 70 lbs and likes to eat the couch would greatly help in feeding them. My dogs have always been my kids, we just two years ago put down what I call my heart dog.. He was the dog my husband got me as a wedding present I had him before I had kids, he protected us when someone tried to break into the house, he barked when the kids were toddlers and would be into something. He did so many things to protect and love our family over two years later and I can just now say his name with a small and a tinge of hurt instead of full tears.
So now we have the 7 furry kids, from oldest to youngest

Allie a 15 year old yorkie that I have had for three years now took her in as a rescue she’s almost naked due to the damage they did to her wtih flea products and has several old broken bones she now is queen bee of our house

Tazz my middle daughters dog a rat terrier I took him as he was going to be a snack for a newly moved in together couple’s rotwiller at 7 weeks old he’s now 5

Princess my youngets dog that lives up to her name shes 4 and a yorkie/shih tzu mix and let me tell you SPOILED rotten.

Teddy about 5 years old (one of my dogs) cockapoo that is so lucky he’s so sweet and cuddle because the pooor dog doesnt have a brain in his head love him to pieces he was abused also

Then Princess and Tazz had an OOPS before I could gt them fixed that resulted in Bella and TJ.. So there a year old and are a rat terrier/yorkie/shih tzu mix. Bella stayed with her mommy Princess and my youngest daughter

TJ is my oldest daughters dog and is just babied like crazy..

Then theres the new puppy of the family (and last dog to be added until we are sadly left by my Allie Girl I hope not for many years to come) but he’s a saint bermanrd/Great dane mix thats 5 months old and weighs 70 bls and has eatten my couch (were working with him)

Most dogs that come here are abused, neglected and what can I say they can read the word SUCKER on our foreheads because we just can’t say no to them.

  19. Jill says:

My first baby is my black lab Daisey. I even named my company after her. She is the most lovable dog-the kids beat her up and she just kisses them back. She has a great bark to keep the door bell ringers in check. Daisey get to go to work every winter with Daddy-hunting down pheasants.

We happen to already use Purina Pro Plan dog food. Only the best for our baby. Great review!!

  20. Corey says:

Within a month of buying our first home , we got our golden retreiver Bailey…super sweetheart and saw us thru 2 babies. After she passed away we got a couple of sisters who are now 8, golden/yellow lab mixes, great temperments, good friends to us humans (and the 2 cats).
Love animals, love when they are all hanging out with us in the family room! We used iams for years and since we are a “no human food for the animals” household, i started to feel badly for the dogs, how boring the same food for 7.5 years! Switched them over to purina 2x a day, and they gobble it up. Nice review.
(ps, we have purina for the 2 cats too!)

  21. Our dog Maggie is very special to our family. My husband and I agreed when we moved into our new home that if I quit smoking I could get a puppy. My “puppy” is now six years old and I’ve been smoke free since then!

  22. Ellie says:

Our dog Dezi passed away about a year ago, but he was very special to us. He was a boston terrier, and he was really the sweetest dog ever. We certainly miss him.

  23. Terri P. says:
