I was very excited at the opportunity to review Purina’s ProPlan Selects, at first just because it’s dog food and with four large dogs, we go through a ton of dog food.

Ever-observant — especially when it comes to food — Faithful checks out the boxes while I learn a little more about dog food and nutrition.

We have always looked at two things when it comes to dog food: price and the serving size. Cheaper dog foods tend to contain more fillers and after feeding an extra cup per serving often do not actually save you much money.

But I never really thought about it much beyond that. After all, it’s dog food, right?

As soon as the bags were opened, the dogs dived right into the research.

They had no complaints.They like dog food. Faithful (the brown one) even accepted handfuls of kibble in lieu of treats at training time. But then, that dog works for the sheer joy of working.

But our dogs are a little more than “just” pets. Yes, they are our companions, and that is a significant role in any family. But they also have jobs to do and they need a diet that can supply them the energy they need for their activity levels.

OK, Zane is usually a little more well-behaved than that, but you just never know when you are working with animals. And that smile makes it all worth while.

And whether they always listen to us or not, our animals are important to us and we do want to give them the best of what we can afford. When I look at the Purina ProPlan Selects, I like that real meat is its first listed ingredient and that there are other quality proteins in the ingredient list. I like that it doesn’t contain corn, wheat or soy as fillers and that there are no artificial colorings, flavors or preservatives. I especially like that it is made in the USA. It provides them the nutrients they need to keep up with their jobs here, to play with the children and to sleep at my feet in the evening when the house is quiet.
