Beekeeping can be a fascinating hobby but it can also be a profitable business. Beekeeping is a full time occupation for other people. There are thousands of hobby beekeepers worldwide and numerous large-scale commercial beekeepers. According to estimates, the annual production of honey worldwide exceeds a million metric tons.

Not yet. I found someone who was still selling them, but after the initial inquiry, he never followed up with a total or means of payment. Soooo....I'm wondering if he's just busy and I'll here from him when he's ready, if he forgot me, or if he doesn't peddle in measly little orders like mine. :)

I've heard of that project! Thank you so much for sharing it. And I'm glad the bees are doing such a nice job on your fruit trees. I like to hear that since we are planning a small orchard ourselves!

I'd heard about that for the cabbage family. I haven't tried it yet, but we are this year. More because we didn't get our garden tilled in time for any early spring plantings, but we'll see how it goes!

We just bought two top bar hives and are anxiously awaiting our first bees!

I love bees! I know first hand how much good they do in our yard. Our fruit trees produce more than our neighbors' and friends' because we plant what the bees like --- and they come! We just participated in the 2010 Hunt for Bees. It's easy and very cool to be part of national research on bees. You can get the info. at www.greatsunflower.org. It makes a great homeschool project or summer activity or whatever. My boys loved it!

We have lots of clovers in the yard & old pasture and garden organically. On the list is to build a top bar hive and have our own bees. That's for the small gap between planting the garden & canning season.

I moved cabbages & their cousins to the fall garden its supposed to work better here in the mid-south and frees up seed starting space. Hoping it works.

My daughter used to be afraid of bees and totally overreacted when she saw them. After many explanations about how the frantic waving was going to get her stung, I noticed a honeybee out on one of our flowers.

I took her out and showed it to her and then held my breath as I touched it while it worked to show her that they aren't aggressive and don't really care that much about what you're doing.

She was totally amazed and has since been a lot more reasonable around the bees.

And all my children are looking forward to our hive!

Hives aren't allowed here; we have been looking into it for awhile... and the ones that we can "smuggle" home are EXPENSIVE!

The house idea is one we came across a few months ago and are considering; I was finally able to get my husband to stop using Round Up--he loves and wants his bees and didn't realize his love of Round Up could be hurting them (he is forbidden near MY garden with HIS Round Up LOL but he uses it along our road and on our slope amongst his fruit trees **gasp**)

I also sprinkle in lots of flower bee attracting flowers and shrubs amongst my veggie garden and around our property... although I haven't really researched this (#1 and #7 of your list) but I think I might do that now :-)

One of my favorite memories and pictures of two of my boys is their attempts at capturing the bees when they were small. One would squat down in his jammies over the ice plant with a pair of pliers and attempt to capture the bees as they landed on the plant: he wished to examine them up close and personal, plus it was a challenge that felt good to conquer. The other would roam our slope in his jammies and barefoot with a plastic baggie so that he could collect bee specimens with his fingers for closer examine... and that whole challenge/conquest thing LOL Luckily, none of my children where allergic and only two took a real interest in the capturing of the bees :-)

Bees are our friends at our home; our neighbors and friends aren't always of the same mind upon visiting though :-)
