The Science Mouse, my daughter’s free science e-zine for kids, published. This month’s theme was The Great Spring Migration.
We had a few problems trying to find someone to interview and we finally just went to a local nature center in the hopes that someone would be there who would be willing to be interviewed. On the way there, she began to grow more nervous by the second. While she and her siblings played at the water table, I thought she was going to chicken out entirely but she finally got up her courage to go and ask the lady there if she could interview her.
I’m not sure what she told the lady before she began recording the interview, but on the way out she asked if she should tell the lady what it was for. I looked at her a little surprised because we had practiced that in the car but said that yes, she should definitely tell her. I was worried that the lady might not want the interview published online, and Mouse was just wondering if telling her would be like unwelcomed advertising. At any rate, once Mouse explained to her that she had an e-zine online where she wrote about science topics and she wanted to include the interview in it, the lady seemed very excited and asked her some questions about it.
Mouse came out of the nature center absolutely beaming. She has been enjoying the emails she has received, but this is the first time she has received such encouragement in person. And to think she almost chickened out…

As always, if your child does any of the projects in the e-zine or related artwork, email it to my daughter at thesciencemouseATgmailDOTcom and she will include it in her Reader Gallery. The next issue is on frogs and amphibians and your children are welcome to contribue! Just email her the article by May 30 or query beforehand.

Welcome to Roscommon Acres, my little home in the country. I write here about life more abundantly, from the joy of a baby’s smile to the almost unbearable grief of losing a son. I am seeking beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, a garment of praise instead of the spirit of despair (Isaiah 61:3).

Just place "Tiggy" in the subject line.

I continue to give both of you high marks for your efforts. That will get each of you one “atta boy” and a green star on the chart at the front of the classroom. I used to dream of seeing a string of green, red and blue stick on stars across my row; never happened as I was not a very good student.
Thanks! We didn’t get as much done as I had wanted for this issue, but she went to Kansas for two weeks to help her grandfather, so I guess that is a fair trade off. We actually aren’t even done with our birding unit!
She is enjoying it, though. Although I’d say she doesn’t enjoy the pressure of trying to finish up the day before it publishes. I’m hoping there won’t be quite so much to do the last day with the next one.
