I always hated gong to bed "on time" in the summer, with the fireflies flahing outside my window.

Oh, I can't imagine not having fireflies. It is so beautiful to watch as they begin to light up in the early evening, just on the tips of the blades of grass. Then their lighted dance rises slowly toward the tree tops and then is over for the evening.

I want to go down to the Smokies during the synchronized light show they put on down there. It is amazing to me that they do that, and I can't quite imagine it.

Shawna, I think bedtimes are important for children's sleep cycles and such. But also for mom's sanity. From their bedtime to mine is my quiet time to do whatever uninterrupted, which is nice now and again. But, like anything, when it becomes set in stone, there are other problems.

Like my kids not getting to catch fireflies?

It's funny you write this as I have also been thinking back to my childhood this summer. I have also been questioning my rigid stance on bedtime.

Now...I must go do some research on fireflies LOL

Great post! We've moved out of firefly country and I'm more than a little sad. Growing up in West Texas, we caught June bugs on summer nights, but I have a feeling that would freak my kids out.

Great post. :) It is so important to let the kids thnk and imagine and figure it out on their own. :)

Now I miss fireflies. When I was a kid they were everywhere. But now our town has trucks that drive around all night spraying for mosquitos and the poor fireflies have either died out or moved on.

Argh...the url seems to have been cut off. Do you know how to make it a link? You can email it to me and I'll stick it in.

I've since found a variety of sites which have answered the question...some eat pollen, some nectar, some nothing...or so they say. Maybe someone does know. But that first search result was what triggered my pondering for this week!
